Software Analysis is similar to computer diagnostics except your focus is on one particular software product and not the entire system.  The approach we use at Flashpoint PC Services will shadow that of the diagnosis process in some respects.

What we are trying to answer is the how, what and why’s of software usage.  By applying expanded Interviewing, demonstration and analyzing techniques the solution you need may be just a few keystrokes away.

Interview

The following questions may need to be answered.

a. Have you ever been able to perform the task mentioned?

b. Do you have documentation accompanying the software?
c. How did you perform this task in the past or is this a new software package?
d. Were you required to re-start the system after the software was installed?
e. Did this problem happen before and was ignored because of time constraints or other issues.
f. Are other computers with the same software experiencing the same results?

Demonstration

Perform the processes leading up to the failure if appropriate.

Analysis

With the two parts of the information provided by the customer a clear picture should emerge consistent with one of the following scenarios.

A.    The software is fine, but one or more keystrokes were entered incorrectly

       1.    Retry the command or procedure

B.    The software is fine on other machines, but not on yours. 

1. Save important working data- (e.g. thumb drive, external drive)
2. Uninstall problem software (Non-Operating System)
3. Review minimum System requirements for Software
4. Perform a Virus Scan/Malware Scan
5. Re-boot (re-start computer)
6. Re-install software and retry based on minimum requirements

C.   If the software is does not work on any machine then

1. Virus Scan/Malware Scan the Install Disks
2. Virus Scan/Malware Scan the System
3. Review minimum System requirements for Software
4. Re-boot (re-start computer)
5. Re-install software and retry based on minimum requirements

D.    If the software fails again and

1. The appropriate keystrokes, commands or otherwise have been entered
2. Your system meets minimum configuration requirements
3. Your system or install disks contain no viruses

Then the software install package is possibly defective and needs to be replaced. 

This Analysis only depicts the simplest way to perform software analysis.  These procedures will not always address every situation.
